Honors and Awards
On June 1st, 2005, at approximately 6:00 p.m. the Fire Department received multiple phone calls for a fire in three story apartment building. The reports came in from all three floors.
Prior to arrival, we received calls of people trapped on several different levels and of people that had jumped from the windows. The first arriving companies began evacuation and rescue efforts.
A report came in from on scene that a woman was trapped on the second floor in the apartment where the fire originated. Crews immediately laddered the building and entered the burning apartment through an exterior window bringing in a hose line to fight the fire while searching for the trapped victim.
Within one minute of entering the structure, the crew found the fire victim. The crew then removed the victim from the burning structure using the exterior window and ladder.
The victim had sustained significant life threatening burns. Paramedics began advanced life saving treatment and transported patient to nearby hospital. The victim survived.
The Firefighters who made entry, preformed the rescue and extinguished the fire were awarded the Bolingbrook Fire Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor. These same firefighters were awarded the Medal of Valor from The Office of the State Fire Marshal. These medals were awarded by the Office of the State Fire Marshal at Springfield.
